Kingwood opens 2026 with a 35-6 win
The Stacy Williams era could hardly have started better. Kingwood traveled to Challenger Columbia Stadium on August 27 and beat Clear Creek 35-6. Senior quarterback Landon Hinson threw for 103 yards and three touchdowns.
It was an encouraging start for a program trying to get back to the postseason after finishing 5-5 in 2025. Two seasons ago the Mustangs showed what this program can become, going 9-5 in 2024 and reaching the Class 6A Division II regional final — among the last teams standing in the Texas playoffs.
The challenge in 2026 will be navigating an extraordinarily difficult district schedule.
Who is Kingwood's head football coach?
Humble ISD named Stacy Williams athletic coordinator and head football coach at Kingwood High School on April 30, 2026. He replaced Cale Melton, who left to take the head coaching job at Lake Creek.
Williams is not new to Kingwood. He served on the Kingwood coaching staff from 2019 through 2021 before joining The Woodlands, where he coached primarily cornerbacks. The Highlanders went 9-3 in 2025 and reached the area round of the Class 6A Division I playoffs.
Humble ISD credits Williams with 13 years of coaching experience, including stops at The Woodlands, Kingwood, Riverwood Middle School and Aldine Davis, and roles as co-defensive coordinator and special teams coordinator. He has also coached track and field.
His ties to the area run deep. Williams lives in Kingwood, his wife coaches at Kingwood Middle School, his children attend Kingwood schools, and his brothers are Kingwood High School graduates. He described the move as a homecoming.
Before coaching, Williams played at Houston's Jack Yates High School and then at Baylor University. He has been public about his ambition for the program, describing a state championship as the standard he is building toward.
An NFL veteran on the coaching staff
Another notable addition is defensive coordinator Coach Wishom, who brings roughly 17 years of coaching experience along with something few high school coaches can list: nine years of professional playing experience across the NFL, CFL and Arena Football League.
That professional background adds a dimension to the program, particularly for defensive players hoping to keep playing after high school.
Kennedy Brown: a national recruit at Kingwood
If Kingwood fans learn one name in 2026, it should be Kennedy Brown.
Brown is a senior offensive tackle and one of the most heavily recruited high school players in the country. At roughly 6-foot-5 and more than 300 pounds, he pairs elite size with the movement skills college programs want at tackle. He has been described as a five-star-caliber national recruit, has collected more than 50 Division I scholarship offers, and was selected for the Under Armour All-America Game.
He is also staying in Texas. Brown announced his commitment to Texas A&M in April 2026. At the time, recruiting rankings cited by the Houston Chronicle placed him around the No. 3 offensive tackle nationally, the No. 4 overall prospect in Texas and the No. 1 prospect in Greater Houston. Dave Campbell's Texas Football has likewise placed him among the state's very top prospects.
Recruiting rankings shift constantly and vary by service, so treat those numbers as a snapshot rather than a fixed record.
Could Kennedy Brown eventually play in the NFL?
It is far too early to predict that about any high school player. But the pathway is a real one: Kingwood High School to Texas A&M to, potentially, professional football. There are several steps between elite high school recruit and NFL draft prospect.
Kingwood has produced NFL talent before. Former Mustang offensive lineman Travis Swanson played at Arkansas, was a third-round draft pick, and played professionally for the Detroit Lions and Miami Dolphins.
Landon Hinson and the Kingwood record book
Brown draws the national attention, but another senior may determine how far Kingwood goes. Landon Hinson, a 6-foot-3, roughly 200-pound senior quarterback, already owns several major Kingwood passing records.

Early-season rankings move quickly in Texas high school football. Following the opening win, MaxPreps had the Mustangs around No. 17 in the Greater Houston area and No. 106 in Texas. Kingwood was not among the top teams in Dave Campbell's statewide Class 6A rankings entering the season.
Statewide rankings do not tell the whole story here. Kingwood's biggest challenge is not proving it can hang with teams across Texas. It is surviving its own district.
District 17-6A may be the toughest in Texas
Kingwood's district includes North Shore, C.E. King, Summer Creek, Atascocita, Crosby, Humble and Channelview. VYPE has described it as potentially the toughest district in the state, and the reasons are not hard to find.

September 18 — Kingwood at C.E. King
The district opener comes against one of the best teams in the state. We will learn quickly how Kingwood measures up against elite 17-6A competition.
October 2 — Summer Creek at Kingwood
This should be one of the biggest home dates of the season at Turner Stadium. A Kingwood win here would change the district conversation.
October 8 — Crosby at Kingwood
Easy to overlook, and important not to. If Kingwood wants one of the four playoff spots, beating teams competing for similar positioning is essential.
October 23 — Kingwood at Atascocita
Potentially the biggest game on the schedule. If the preseason projections hold roughly true, Kingwood may need to jump Atascocita to claim the fourth playoff spot.
November 5 — Kingwood at North Shore
There are few harder ways to close a Texas high school regular season. Depending on how September and October go, Kingwood could arrive with its playoff future settled — or with everything still on the line.

Kingwood plays its varsity home football games primarily at Turner Stadium, a Humble ISD facility located in Humble. It is one of the district's main football venues and hosts games for multiple Humble ISD programs.

Kingwood football has deep community roots
High school football in Texas is about more than wins and losses, and that is true in Kingwood.
The Mustang program sits at the center of a wide support network. Youth football leagues feed into it. Booster clubs raise money and staff the concession stands. The Kingwood High School band is known as the Mighty Mustang Military Marching Band, and it competes in UIL's Military Class rather than the standard marching contest — a distinct style with its own traditions and its own state championship.
The program has been among the best in Texas in its class. Kingwood finished third at the 2025 UIL State Military Marching Band Contest in the 5A/6A division, and took state runner-up honors in 2023, which was the second time in three years the band had finished second at that contest. Over the years the program has also performed well beyond Texas, including appearances in events such as the Rose Parade and the H-E-B Houston Thanksgiving Day Parade.
So when you are at Turner Stadium on a Friday night, halftime is not a break. For a lot of Kingwood residents, the band is half the reason to stay in your seat.
